In 1906, the ACC held it's first General Mountaineering Camp at Yoho Lake, not too far from the Little Yoho Valley.  While there, they climbed many of the peaks in the area, including some we will attempt during this camp.  Join us for 6 days of instruction and fun at the SK Section's Mountaineering Camp.

This camp will be mainly of interest to aspiring mountaineers wishing to expand their skills and experience and for those who have never done anything like this before and want a low-pressure environment in which to try it out.

For returning participants, we will be trying to focus on providing opportunities to develop your leadership skills.

The Saskatchewan Section has an exclusive booking for the Stanley Mitchell Hut which means we will be the only group using the hut while we're there.

Questions about registering for the camp may be directed to Joel Bruneau, our fearless Camp Manager.  If you have questions of a technical nature about the activities at the camp, contact Dave McCormick, Jesse Invik or Ivan Hitchings.  Dave, Jesse and Ivan have been bumbling around the mountains together for years, long enough that we can almost always  anticipate what each other will say and do.  We've also heard each other's jokes!   Joining us this year as our 4th trip leader will be Mark Rosin.  Some of you may know Mark from his involvement in a number of Orienteering Races.

This page last updated - July 09, 2010

Dates: Sunday July 18th (hike in, set up and instruction) to Friday July 23rd (clean up & hike out), 2010

Location: Stanley Mitchell Hut, Little Yoho Valley, Yoho National Park.

Participants: Maximum of 26 persons which includes the 4 trip leaders and the camp manager.  A complete participant list will be sent to everyone after the end of May to facilitate transportation and possible food coordination.

Equipment: An equipment list is available here.  Note that plastic double mountaineering boots are not really necessary, in fact, they can be quite uncomfortable; good hiking boots should suffice as long as you can strap crampons to them.

Cost: Camp fees have been set at $160/person.  This includes 5 nights of accommodation at the Stanley Mitchell Hut and any other minor costs associated with running the camp.  Participants will need the appropriate National Park passes (see additional below), their own equipment, food, etc.  The deadline for paying the camp costs will be in May 21st, 2010 and any spaces remaining after that time will be opened up to any ACC member.

The Little Yoho and Stanley Mitchell Hut is within Yoho National Park.  Anyone staying overnight in the backcountry in the National Parks requires a Wilderness Pass.  These can be obtained from the ACC in Canmore.  If you will be doing more backcountry camping in the National Parks during the year, the most economical way is to purchase an Annual Wilderness Pass.  These passes are available at any National Park Information Office or, at a discount, from the ACC Clubhouse in Canmore .  If you pay for the backcountry camping by the night, it will cost you $9/night.  For 5 nights, that's $45.  Obtaining these passes is the responsibility of the individual participant.

Food: This camp is self-catered.  All participants must come with their own food for the 5 days.  The hut has propane stoves and lights as well as all pots, dishes, cutlery, etc.

Activities: Experienced leaders will provide instruction and lead daily excursions to objectives in the area.  Objectives range from glacier-accessed peaks, scrambles from easy to moderate as well as numerous hiking trails.  Participants will be encouraged to take on rope leader responsibilities and participate in decisions under the supervision of the trip leaders to gain experience.  Although peaks will be climbed, the most important objective is for participants to learn and practice safe mountaineering skills that they will be able to use later.

Climbing & Hiking objectives in the area include the following:
