What does the Alpine Club have to offer you??
As a new or potential member of the Alpine Club of Canada you
may wonder exactly what opportunities are available to you to develop
your skills, expand your experience or meet new people who share your
love of the mountains.
Our members have a wide range of interests, including hiking and
scrambling, rock, ice, and sport climbing, summer and winter
mountaineering, and backcountry and telemark skiing. There are trips,
courses and events offered at both a local section level and by our
national office. Each of these activities will help you develop your
skills and have a good time. We try to address all interests and
ability levels, but please remember most of these activities are
organized by volunteers. There are certain expectations on you as a
participant and we hope that you will also think of what you have to
offer. Volunteers are the driving force behind the Alpine Club. We
invite you to find out how you can get involved.
The Saskatchewan Section of the Alpine Club of Canada offers skill
development opportunities on a regular basis. Crevasse rescue and rock
rescue clinics, map and compass courses are popular. Participate in
section trips and climb with other section members on personal trips to
further develop your skills.
Our national club offers many opportunities to develop your skills. A
schedule of summer, winter and international activities is produced
regularly. Each year a General Mountaineering Camp and a Youth Camp are
featured. Activities organized by our national club are usually one
week in length and try to provide a variety of opportunities. Our Sport
Climbers' Registry is also administered at the national level. This
provides sport climbers with information on upcoming competitions and
events. Our national programs are designed to complement what is
offered at the local level.
And, yes, we can also help you find new friends to get out with. As
well, we can provide you with social events such as slide shows, video
nights and monthly climbing nights at the local climbing gym. Our
section's main event of the year is hosting the Best of the Banff Festival of
Mountain Films World Tour. January 2010 will be the 17th year for the event in Saskatoon and all have been very successful.
This year's event will be in January 2010 at the TCU Place in Saskatoon.
The Alpine Club of Canada also operates the largest system of
backcountry huts in North America. There are over two dozen huts owned
and/or managed by the ACC that are located throughout the mountains of
Alberta and British Columbia as well as one in Ontario and one in New
York State. Our backcountry huts were built to serve the hiking and
mountaineering community to provide overnight accommodation ranging
from easy access to remote mountain locations. These facilities are a
wonderful spot for a relaxing weekend or a great staging point for many
mountaineering adventures. In addition, our Clubhouse in Canmore has
accommodation for 30 people, plus a group cabin with space for 15 more
people. The Canadian Alpine Centre in Lake Louise, with couples and
family rooms, is very popular.
The Alpine Club of Canada is committed to preserving alpine
environments and to protecting access to those environments and other
important climbing areas.
If you just want to see a slide show or read about other people's
adventures, there is also a place for you as a member of the Alpine
Club. What we all have in common is a love of the mountains. So, join
us! And we sincerely hope you enjoy the Club.
Instructions for joining are on the national web site.
