There are strange things done 'neath the midnight sun .......

Trip report by Dave McCormick

..... And with that verse in the back of my mind, I agreed to join 4 Toronto Section members on an expedition to the St Elias Mountains in mid-June, 2005.  The objective: South Walsh, supposed to be the highest unclimbed peak in North America.  Snow and ice conditions eventually caused us to drop the South Walsh objective in favour of a few other unclimbed peaks in the vicinity of our camp.  And so we spent 10 days skiing around, enjoying the scenery and bagging a few minor peaks.  We made our escape on the last available day before weather prevented any further flights for a full week.  I then traveled to Skagway to see the sights and find the start of the Chilkoot Trail, visited Carcross, White Pass....  Also walked back and forth around Whitehorse, hiked the local trails, looked for gold nuggets.... didn't find any...  The following pictures will give a bit of the flavour of the trip.  Click on the thumbnails for larger images....
