Stanley Mitchell Centennial Camp - July 16-22, 2006
Exactly 100 years and 1 week after the end of the first mountaineering camp of the newly formed Alpine Club of Canada, a more modern group of participants hiked into the Little Yoho Valley to the start of their mountaineering camp. In 1906, the camp was set up at Yoho Pass, just a few kilometers away from the location of the 2006 camp at the ACC's Stanley Mitchell Hut.
The weather was glorious for the whole week and ascents were made of the President, Isolated Peak, a traverse of the Whaleback, Mt Kerr, Mt Pollinger and Mt McArthur. Trails to Twin Falls, the Iceline, Celeste Lake and Kewetinok Pass were hiked. A number of the group took part in a day-long introductory snow school and crevasse rescue clinic instructed by Mountain Guide Cyril Shokoples.
Special guests provided evening discussions and entertainment and included author and mountain personality Chic Scott, Parks Canada's Joe Jazvac, the ACC's Mike Mortimer and an appearance by the modern reincarnation of Elizabeth Parker, played by Laurie Schwartz.
