Centennial Expedition

The | Past

In 1967 one of the most exciting and ambitious of all the Canadian Centennial celebrations was undertaken by the Alpine Club of Canada. On July 8th, 56 mountain climbers from across Canada set out to visit 14 unclimbed summits in a remote and unexplored region of the St. Elias mountain range in the Yukon. Twelve of the mountains were named after the provinces and territories. The thirteenth was named Centennial Peak and the fourteenth, which straddled the Alaskan border, was named Good Neighbor Peak. Despite the obstacles of unpredictable and hostile weather and dangerous snow conditions, all but two of the chosen summits were reached. Mt. Manitoba was finally climbed in 1992, but Mount Saskatchewan (3,480 m / 11,387 ft) remains unclimbed to this day!
